There is a particular card game called Caravan, which many characters play in Nevada, but I found it hard to get involved. Outside from combat, we can also find multiple mini-games and activities. You can tell them to stay close to you or keep the distance, use melee or ranged weapons, be passive or aggressive, which is a good way to fix most of the AI flaws (unfortunately still pretty visible on enemies). You can even give them instructions through the companion wheel, which is something that Fallout 3 was completely lacking. These companions can’t die, but only rendered unconscious, which makes them the perfect distraction. They are not your puppets though they all have their own unique quest lines that once completed reward them with new upgrades and perks. If you need help you can always bring with you up to two companions (one human and one animal/robotic), but you must arm them using your own inventory. V.A.T.S, on the contrary, shows exactly the damage dealt and the percentage of success of your attacks, so it’s probably preferred to the clunky first person gunplay. Approaching enemies in real time is harder and due to the lack of shelters you will probably take more damage, while also dealing less depending on your aim skills and level. This system hasn’t changed much since Fallout 3, only adding smaller improvements when using melee weapons. You can approach enemies in real time like any FPS or take advantage of the V.A.T.S system that pauses the time and gives you the opportunity to target a particular area of the body spending Action Points (AP). Gameplay-wise the game still features an hybrid first/third person view.

This could potentially block some side quests if your karma level is too low and people don’t trust you enough. Killing mutants and criminals may reward you with positive karma, while stealing and robbing NPCs only gives negative karma, even when you are not caught in the process. There is also a more traditional karma system that is entirely based on your actions. Having a bad reputation with a faction will obviously lead them to shoot you on sight. And yet, there will be many possibilities to betray the faction you joined or simply refuse to support anyone (if you prefer being a lone wolf). Staying neutral is possible only during the first hours, as you will soon encounter different situations where you will be asked to choose one side. The reputation system that was completely missing in the previous game finally returns in New Vegas, with every single choice affecting how factions see you.
#GAMEBRYO ENGINE FALLOUT NEW VEGAS SERIES#
Obsidian probably crafted the most interesting plot of the entire series up to this date, filled with charismatic characters and well written sub-stories that show a perfect balance between mature topics and hilarious dialogues.Ĭontrary to Fallout 3, there is no clear distinction bewteen what’s right or wrong, which means that quests can be completed in so many ways without being able to predict any possible consequence. This traditional formula works greatly with what is the game best selling point: give the player the freedom to experience the story at his own pace. As in every Fallout game we start the journey in search of something, a special item like in Fallout 1 and 2, or a close relative like in Fallout 3 and 4, only to understand that there is a bigger threath on the horizon. This premise is not new to those who know the series well enough.

Even the first tutorial section is optional and can be entirely skipped. You can follow the story or simply explore Nevada like a wanderer. Like in a detective drama, the game shows you the tracks to follow if you are looking to complete the main quest, but it doesn’t hold your hand. Your objective is simple: find the man who nearly killed you and retrieve the mysterious package that was stolen from you. When you are satisfied with your character customization, you can leave the house and start your journey. But first, have some fun choosing your gender, age and appearance while also selecting your first skills and perks. He will lead you through a short personality test that will be used to detect your predefined attributes, though you can manually change them if you don’t like the end result.

After being ambushed and shot to death by a well-dressed gentleman and his gang, you wake up in the nearby town of Goodsprings, or more precisely, in the house of a doctor who just saved your life. You take the role of a “courier” whose duty is to deliver an important package to the shining city of New Vegas.
